As they have some personal work in the nearby city both of them have decided to go together. As the journey is long both of them started early in the morning. By noon both of them were tired and decided to take rest as well as finish their lunch. They rested under a tree and nearby there was a pond. As they opened their lunch pack they saw a stranger who was going on his work but stopped to quench his thirst in the pond. He was very happy seeing both Madhav and Mahesh. As he found that they were about to have their lunch the stranger requested the friends," My dear sirs, my name is Venu. I am returning from the city to my village. As I am in a hurry I am unable to pack my lunch and I will be happy if you can offer me some food." Both the friends agreed to share their lunch. Madhav is carrying 3 chapatis and Mahesh 5 chapatis. They made each chapati into 3 pieces and ate all the chapatis evenly. As a token of gratitude Venu gave them both 8 Annas (1/16 of a rupee those days) and asked them to share the coins. Madhav said "Let's share the amount evenly. You take 4 Annas and I will take another 4 Annas." For which Mahesh said "As the gentleman has given 8 Annas I'll take 5 Annas for my 5 chapatis and you take 3 Annas for your 3 chapatis." Madhav did not agree to have 3 Annas and insisted to have 4 Annas as his share. While both of them are engaged in this heated argument an old man who observed what is happening there intervened and asked them "Will you abide by my decision. As I have observed the whole thing that took place here I can judge properly and decide how much each of you should get." Both of them agreed. The old man said "As you have made 24 pieces of the 8 chapatis and each of you consumed 8 pieces each. Madhav consumed his share of of 8 pieces and the only portion he gave to the guest is 1 piece and Mahesh also consumed 8 pieces but gave 7 pieces from his share to the guest. So Madhav can take ! Anna and the other 7 Annas should be taken by Mahesh," saying this the old man left on his way and the two friends on their way. Madhav grumbled inside "I should have taken 3 Annas when offered by Mahesh but my greed made me lose 2 Annas Hereafter I will also be fair like Mahesh"
