Vishwateja was a rishi living in the precincts of Chitrakuta. It was monsoon time and it rained heavily in Chitrakuta. Vishwateja on his way to finish his morning ablutions saw a snake clinging to a branch of a tree and almost dead. Vishweteja brought the snake to his ashram and nursed it. With the care taken by the rishi the snake recovered well and started living in the ashram. Because of the environs in the ashram and its vicinity the snake has become soft and never tried to harm anyone. Many a time people after seeing the snake tried to either kill it or chase it but the snake never tried to retort on its attackers. One day a mass of people saw the snake and tried to kill it with heavy sticks. Vishwateja chanced upon being on the spot and saved the snake from being killed. The rishi asked the snake why it has become so timid and meek. For which the snake replied as it began a new lease of life in the ashram it cannot harm anyone. Vishwateja while praising the snake advised it to not harm anyone and at the same time not get harmed by anyone. When people try to harm you hiss at them but do not bite them. The snake followed the advise and people no longer came near the snake.
